Grade 0 in pregnancy means and refers to the very young, healthy and immature placenta, that is often seen in early pregnancy, up to around 18 to 20 weeks into pregnancy.

The Grade 0 placenta in pregnancy signifies that the placenta is optimally functioning and appears uniform as well as smooth and free of any calcifications or mature indentations on an ultrasound.

Grade 0 placenta in pregnancy is often observed during your first and early second trimesters of pregnancy, often before 18 weeks to 20 weeks.

On the ultrasound, the grade 0 placenta in pregnancy has a uniform and homogeneous echotexture, smooth texture with a straight and unbroken chorionic plate.

There are also no signs of calcium deposits or maturity related changes in a grade 0 placenta, which is normal and also desirable in early pregnancy.

It's also the earliest stage in what's known as the Grannum classification system and "Grade 0-Grade III" placenta classifications are used by doctors during pregnancy to track how the placenta matures.

If you have a grade 0 placenta that is noted later in pregnancy it, simply indicates that the placenta is still maturing and is not always or necessarily a cause for any concern, as the placental grading is not always a strong prediction or predictor of fetal outcome.

The placenta is a temporary, but vital organ that develops in the uterus during pregnancy to support the development of the fetus.

The placenta acts as a lifeline to the fetus and baby, by providing the baby and fetus with oxygen and nutrients, from the mother to the body, while also removing any waste products through the umbilical cord.

The placenta also produces essential hormones and is also expelled after birth occurs.

For nutrient and oxygen transfer, the placenta acts as a sponge, and allows oxygen, nutrients and antibodies to pass from maternal blood to the fetus, and carbon dioxide waste to be removed.

The placenta also acts as an endocrine organ and produces the crucial hormones like hCG, progesterone, estrogen, that help to maintain the pregnancy and support the development of the fetus.

Placentas also act as an immune barrier and protects the fetus from immune attack by the mother and acts as a natural barrier against some infections.

The placenta also begins developing from the fertilized egg/embryo shortly after implantation and grows throughout the pregnancy and it also connects to the fetus via the umbilical cord and to the wall of the uterus.

Following the delivery of the baby, the placenta is also delivered or removed as it's no longer needed.
