Curdled milk is usually a sign that the milk is spoiled especially if the milk smells sour.

If the milk was fresh and has curdled then it has spoiled and should be thrown out.

Milk can sit out at room temperature for up to 2 hours.

After 2 hours the milk when left at room temperature can begin growing bacteria and going sour and should be thrown out.

Once you buy the milk it should be promptly refrigerated and if you're gonna be awhile before you can get the milk home it's best to place the milk in an ice chest to keep it cold.

Milk left out overnight should be thrown out as well because it likely has spoiled by that time and could contain bacteria that you may not be able to see.

Milk that has actually gone bad will also smell sour and you wouldn't want to drink it anyway.

In general, perishable foods like milk should not sit out of the refrigerator or cooler for longer than two hours.

Cut that time down to an hour in the summer if the temperature reaches 90 degrees F.

After that time frame, bacteria can start to grow.

The FDA asserts that you should never keep unopened milk out of the refrigerator at room temperature for more than two hours.

However, this window reduces as the temperature rises.

This means that when the temperature exceeds 45°F, unopened milk can last up to an hour.

While there are no set recommendations, most research suggests that as long as it's been stored properly, unopened milk generally stays good for 5–7 days past its listed date, while opened milk lasts at least 2–3 days past this date.

If your milk doesn't smell like milk, it's likely expired.

Milk that's gone bad exudes a foul odor — and it will be very obvious upon taking a whiff.

If you drink spoiled milk you will often be just fine other than getting an upset stomach, diarrhea, stomach cramping, vomiting and feel sick.

Most times the sickness from drinking spoiled milk goes away within 1 to 2 days.

In severe cases you could get more severe poisoning but if you only drank a small amount of spoiled milk you will most often be just fine.

Drinking spoiled milk will make you sick if you drink a lot of it like a full glass of spoiled milk.

However accidentally drinking a small amount of spoiled milk will usually only cause an upset stomach, nausea and stomach pain and possibly diarrhea.

Drinking a lot of spoiled milk can cause food poisoning which can be mild to severe.

If you just accidentally ingested a small sip of spoiled milk then you don't need to worry and you'll be fine.

But if you drink more spoiled milk then you could become very sick.

When milk starts to spoil or when spoiled it should be thrown out.

The main reason for the spoiled milk to be gut wrenching is due to the bacteria in the spoiled milk.

Milk that has expired can be safe to consume as long as it's within a few days of it's expiration date and has not actually spoiled.

If the milk has gone past a few days of expiration then it's best to throw out the expired milk and not risk yourself getting sick.

In most cases, symptoms caused by drinking spoiled milk resolve within 12-24 hours.

The key is to prevent dehydration by sipping small amounts of fluid that contain sugar or electrolytes, such as popsicles and oral rehydration fluids (Pedialyte for children).
