Symptoms of the fried rice syndrome typically begin 6 to 15 hours after eating contaminated foods, which can include various meats, milk, vegetables or fish.

Bacillus cereus is caused by the ingestion of food contaminated with enterotoxigenic B. cereus or the emetic toxin.

In non-gastrointestinal illness, reports of respiratory infections similar to respiratory anthrax have been attributed to B.
