Sweating onions means a cooking process of the onions of softening an onion and drawing out its natural sweetness without allowing it to take on any color.

The onions are gently sweated in a little oil or butter.

The first stage is called sweating and usually happens very quickly.

Basically when you're sweating the onions you are cooking the onions by maintaining a high enough heat to get them going, but not so high that they begin to brown.

The heat and the salt will draw the moisture out of the onions, thus 'sweating' them.

Foods that you can eat with fried onions and foods that go well with fried onions include baked potatoes, meat loaf, stir fry, tacos, salads, soups, and chili!

You should always refrigerate any leftover fried or cooked onions to avoid spoilage and bacteria growth on the fried or cooked onions.

To maximize the shelf life of cooked onions for safety and quality, refrigerate the onions in shallow airtight containers or resealable plastic bags.

Properly stored, cooked onions will last for 3 to 5 days in the refrigerator.

Fried onions are very delicious and have a sweet, toasty and salty taste.

When onions are being cooked, the heat from the pan raises the temperature within the cells of the onion.

This reaction of breaking down larger sugars into single sugar molecules is what causes sautéed or caramelized onions to brown and develop a sweeter flavor.

Yes you can fry red onions.

Red onions can be fried or cooked just like any other onions can.

Directions For Fried Red Onions:

Slice red onions.

Heat the oil in a non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat.

Add red onion slices and stir.

Reduce heat to medium, and fry the red onions, stirring periodically, for 10 minutes, or until desired doneness.

Onions don't turn to sugar when cooked.

However onions naturally contain sugar and the sugar is released when you cook the onions long enough.

100 grams of raw onion won't contain much sugar at all.

But if you cook onions for a long time, you will evaporate a lot of moisture, thereby increasing sugar content by weight significantly.

Thus, 100 grams of caramelized onions will definitely increase the sugar content of a dish.

The difference between sauteed onions and caramelized onions is in how much time they are cooked.

Sauteed Onions are not cooked for as long as Caramelized onions.

Caramelized onions are simply onions that are cooked for an extended period of time with a bit of fat (either oil or butter).

Sauteed onions don't spend as much time on the heat.

They get soft and they may brown a bit, but sauteed onions only take a few minutes and still retain their sharp, onion flavor.

The reason you fry onions first is to bring out the sugars of the onions by caramelizing them.

When you prepare the onions first you bring out the sugars of the onion by carefully caramelizing it.

The same with the garlic, but it needs less heat (and therefore is added after the onions) If you put it in with the other vegetables the onion will be cooked. It will still be sweet, but not caramelized.

Onions and peppers take about the same time to Saute although onions usually saute slightly faster than peppers but not by much.

When cooking the onions it takes around 12 minutes to soften the onions.

Add the finely chopped onions.

Ensure the onions are coated in the oil and butter and allow to sizzle as it cooks.

After about 12 minutes, the onions will become almost translucent.

How long does it take for onions to soften in soup?

Recipes recommend sauteing your onions for up to 10 minutes to have them softened and turn a translucent color before adding them to your soup.

If you wish to caramelize your onions, you must cook them in your pan for up to 45 minutes for the best result.

You can use olive oil to fry onions and even caramelize onions as well.

Onions are almost always cooked in some kind of fat, although they can be softened in a small amount of liquid.

Usually this fat is a neutral oil such as grapeseed, but can also be olive oil, butter/ghee, or bacon fat.

To caramelize onions with olive oil coat the bottom of the pan with olive oil, or a mixture of olive oil and butter, if using (about 1 teaspoon per onion).

Let the onions cook for 30 minutes to 1 hour more, stirring every few minutes.

As soon as the onions start sticking to the pan, let them stick a little and brown, but then stir them before they burn.

You can cook onions in cast iron.

Cast iron skillets can be used to cook onions in and they work great to cook onions.

Just be sure to add some cooking oil to the cast iron skillet before placing the onions in the cast iron skillet.

Also be sure to stir the onions around in the cast iron skillet so they don't burn or stick to the pan.

If you want to caramelize onions in a cast iron skillet you can do so as well.

How to caramelize onions in a cast iron skillet.

Heat the oil in a 12-inch cast iron skillet over medium heat.

Add the onions and sauté for 5 minutes or until starting to soften.

Add the salt, reduce the heat to medium low and cook for 50 to 80 minutes, stirring every few minutes, or until the onions are very soft, golden brown, and caramelized.

If you just want to simply cook the onions then it takes a few minutes to 5 to 10 minutes of cooking.

Keep an eye on the onions as they are cooking so they don't burn.
