When a body is taken to the coroner's office most bodies stay at the coroner's for 24 to 48 hours.
After 24 to 48 hours the body is examined and then released to the funeral home.
Sometimes a coroner may have to keep the body for up to a week in rare cases as in when more investigation needs done.
Or if they are trying to identify the body and are trying to contact the family members to get a funeral home to come and take the body.
In some cases such as a car accident the body may be pronounced dead at the scene and may not need any further examination.
Then in those cases the Coroner may take it to the morgue and not need to examine it.
The body will then be put into a freezer until the body is released to the funeral home or family.
