It depends on the state the sentence was handed out in.
Most likely if a person was sentenced to 20 years in prison with parole then they most likely will have to serve 9 or 10 years minimum before being eligible for parole.
There's no guarantee of parole though and the person could have to serve the whole 20 years before being released from prison.
