Before icing a cake you should allow the cake to cool off for at least 15 minutes.
So once you take the cake out of the oven allow the cake to cool for the 15 minutes until it's not hot and then apply the icing to the cake.
If you apply the icing to the cake too soon while the cake is still hot the icing will melt off the cake and then leave a mess.
So wait at least 15 to 20 minutes before applying the icing and you should also wait the 15 or 20 minutes before removing the cake from the pan so that it doesn't potentially fall apart.
I do other things while waiting the 15 to 20 minutes and then the cake is ready to be iced.
