If the hot dogs are just past their use by date and expiration date but they hot dogs have been kept refrigerated or frozen then the hot dogs would still be safe to eat.
If the hot dogs are old and smell bad or have a slimy feeling to them then the hot dogs should be thrown out because they can cause food poisoning.
But just because the hot dogs are old doesn't always mean that the hot dogs are bad as long as they smell good and are not slimy feeling and provided the hot dogs have been kept frozen or refrigerated.
Hot dogs will sometimes last a few weeks to a month in the refrigerator before going bad but if you freeze the hot dogs they can easily keep for up to a year or even 2 years in some cases.
I buy lots of hot dogs and have kept some for as long as 2 years in the freezer and they've been okay to eat.
The hot dogs just lose their freshness after the use by date but it doesn't mean that they're bad.
