Old poop can stay in your colon for 24 hours to 72 hours as part of the normal digestion process.

But if you're constipated, the waste and old poop can sit in the large intestine for several days or even longer, which can lead to harder and drier poop and also a dangerous blockage known as fecal impaction.

The time that it takes for food to travel from your mouth to the end of your digestive tract often ranges from 1 day to 3 days and most doctors also consider anything longer than 3 days without having a bowel movement to be too long.

When poop remains in your body past the normal timeframe, your colon continues to absorb water from the waste and this also causes the poop to become dense, dry and difficult to pass and if left unaddressed for weeks or even months a backlog can result in constipation, fecal impaction, overflow diarrhea and tension on your colon.

Fecal impaction is a severe and hardened mass of poop that gets stuck in your colon or rectum.

It is possible to have 5 to 10 pounds of poop in you, although it's also extremely rare for just a single bowel movement.

The average bowel movement or poop weighs around 1/4 lb to 1 lb and having a 5 to 10 pound weighing poop would only be produced after severe and long term constipation or having an unusually large intake of high fiber food as well as fluids.

The amount of poop that your colon can hold in pounds is between 5 pounds to 10 pounds of poop.

Adults often hold between 1.1 to 4.4 pounds of poop in their colon at any time.

And when constipated an adult can accumulate enough poop in their colon to temporarily increase the amount of poop they are holding in their colon to 5 pounds to 10 pounds, which is due to the delayed transit time and drier and denser poop.

A single standard bowel movement also averages around 0.5 lbs to 1 lb.

Although some extreme claims also suggest that the human body can hold up to 20 pounds of waste, but gastroenterologists also note that the human colon's capacity makes anything that is over 10 lbs very extremely rare and often is indicative of severe fecal impaction.

So while it is technically possible for your body to hold 10 pounds of poop, it is also very rare.

The average adult typically holds about 1 to 2 pounds of poop at any given time.

Holding 10 pounds of poop would require extreme, untreated constipation or a serious medical obstruction.

Daily Output: The average person eliminates about 14 to 16 ounces of poop daily.

The "Toxic Poop" Myth: Claims that people carry 10, 20, or even 40 pounds of "toxic sludge" stuck to their colon walls are medically unfounded.

The colon is a transit organ, not a storage tank.

When It Can Happen: Holding 10 pounds of fecal matter is only possible in cases of severe fecal impaction or medical conditions like megacolon, where the bowel becomes massively stretched.

If you are experiencing severe bloating, abdominal pain, or have gone several days without a bowel movement, you should consult a doctor or a gastroenterologist to rule out blockages.

Signs that your colon is overly full or backed up include fewer than three bowel movements a week, straining, passing hard or pellet-like poop, persistent bloating, and a constant feeling of incomplete evacuation.

You may also experience mild to severe abdominal pain, nausea, or even overflow diarrhea around a blockage.

If you are experiencing severe symptoms like an inability to pass gas or poop, vomiting, fever, or intense cramping, consult a doctor immediately as this could indicate fecal impaction or a bowel obstruction.
