The reason why you put ice on a grill is to clean the grill and easily remove stuck on grease as well as food debris.

When you place the ice on the hot grill and grill rack the ice then hits the hot metal and the rapid cooling causes the grime and food debris to contract and loosen and the melting of the ice creates steam which works as a steam cleaning effect, which eliminates the need for you to use any harsh chemicals for cleaning your grill.

I've seen McDonald's employees using ice on the griddles or grills inside the restaurant that they fry hamburgers and other meats on and it works pretty well.

You can use the ice to clean a regular outdoor grill or indoor griddles or grills.

Rubbing an onion on a grill also cleans the grill as well as season the grill grates.

The onion's natural moisture and acidity creates steam which loosens, degreases and removes stuck on food and grime on the grill grates.

Rubbing an onion on the grill grates also can create a non stick surface by forming a layer of sulfide and rubbing the onion on a grill also adds a subtle flavor to future grilled food.

To rub an onion on the grill grates, you take a raw onion and cut it in half and then rub it over the grill grates with the grill heated up to at least 500 F.

The halved raw onion, when rubbed on the hot grill grates is a natural and non toxic cleaner and produces steam to also removed charred debris.

The onion's natural oils and acidity also sanitize the grills grates and it's also a safe and chemical free alternative to cleaning grill grates with wire brushes.

The onion's natural acidity loosens the cooked on food and grease from grill grates.

And the onion's juices also have antibacterial properties, which kill bacteria on the grill grates.

Rubbing a raw potato on a hot grill grate also works and cleans the grill grates and creates a natural, non-stick surface by depositing its starch, preventing leaner foods like chicken or fish from sticking, and it's a simple hack to avoid using sprays or brushes.

To rub a raw potato on the grill you heat the grill up and cut a potato in half, spear it with a fork, and rub the cut side vigorously across the hot grates to release the starch and clean off debris.
