In my opinion Braunschweiger tastes better than liverwurst as Braunschweiger has a strong smoky flavor.
However if you prefer a more balanced flavor then Liverwurst can be better for your tastes.
Braunschweiger is a specific type of smoked liver sausage that has a smoky, spicy liver flavor and liverwurst is a more generic term for a finely ground liver sausage which is also often milder, smoother and can also be prepared in several different ways.
I like liverwurst as well but prefer braunschweiger.
Germans eat liverwurst by spreading the liverwurst on bread or rye with some mustard and pickles.
Germans also eat liverwurst served as sliced liverwurst with pickled cucumbers and mustard on a plate or even as a filling in pancakes.
Liverwurst is also known as liver sausage and is a cooked spreadable type of sausage that is made mainly from pork, beef and or veal livers that is mixed with the meat, fat, spices and even sometimes cream or onions.
Liverwurst is often served by being thinly sliced and on crackers or in sandwiches.
Liverwurst has a rich and deep flavor that is also similar to spreadable bologna although it's also less intense than one may expect from liver.
And while liverwurst is a general term for liver sausage, a specific type known as Braunschweiger is made from only pork livers and is often smoked.
While still safe to eat liverwurst is now controversial in the United States due to a large scale Listeria outbreak that was linked to Boar's Head liverwurst in 2024.
The large scale Listeria outbreak linked to Boar's Head liverwurst in 2024 resulted in several people being hospitalized and even deaths, which resulted in a massive recall of Boar's head liverwurst and some other products.
Due to the listeria outbreak and large recall, Boar's Head discontinued their production of liverwurst permanently.
Although liverwurst is still made by some other companies and is safe to eat in most cases.
Oscar Mayer does still make liverwurst although liverwurst was discontinued by Boar's Head due to a listeria outbreak at their Jarratt, Virginia plant.
But Liverwurst is still made by Oscar Mayer and some other companies as well.
The reason why liverwurst is discontinued is due to a deadly listeria outbreak which was linked to a specific production processed used only for liverwurst in the Jarratt, Virginia, Boar's Head plant.
The listeria outbreak resulted in 9 deaths and 57 people being hospitalized, which lead to a comprehensive product recall and the company's decision to cease production of liverwurst altogether.
The company Boar's head also issued a large scale recall of over 7 million lbs of their deli meat products, which included liverwurst due to the outbreak of listeria.
Even though Boar's head discontinued making liverwurst, liverwurst itself is still available and made by several companies.
You can still get liverwurst from companies like Oscar Mayer who makes braunschweiger and even smaller companies that also make liverwurst such as Schaller & Weber and Stoltzfus Meats.
Liverwurst is healthy in moderation but can be unhealthy when eaten in excess.
Liverwurst is typically high in calories and fat, which could contribute to weight gain if consumed in large quantities without balancing other dietary components.
