Horse meat is not actually illegal in the US, although the sale and the slaughter of horses for human consumption is heavy restricted in the United States as a result of ethical, cultural and practical factors.

Also federal funding for the horse slaughter inspections was cut in 2006, which makes it impossible for companies to legally sell horse meat for human consumption.

However you can still slaughter your own horses for human consumption but cannot sell it for human consumption in the United States.

We don't eat horse meat normally in America like we do other animal meats.

However some people may slaughter horses in America for their own consumption but horse meat is not consumed widely in America as horse meat is illegal in many places to sell it.

Most people in the USA or American have never eaten horse meat.

Although horse meat is consumed in Some Latin American and North American countries but horse meat is illegal in some others.

North America and North American refers to Canada, Greenland, Mexico, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, and the United States.

Latin America is a region of the Americas encompassing countries south of the United States where Romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French) are predominantly spoken.

The United States is a separate country located north of Mexico.

There's a strong cultural taboo against the slaughter and consumption of horse meat and so the sale of horse meat for human consumption is heavy restricted as horses are also viewed mainly as companion animals or working animals in American culture and not as livestock for food and eating horse meat is seen as a violation of the cultural norm.

There are also no facilities in the United States for slaughtering of horses for human consumption, as the USDA does not inspect horse slaughterhouses.

Also federal funding for USDA inspections of horse slaughterhouses has been blocked.
