When making cheesecake Philadelphia cream cheese is better for the cheesecake because the Philadelphia cream cheese provides a good balance of tanginess and texture.

And mascarpone is through and creamier and can be too decadent on it's own.

Some recipes also call for combing both Philadelphia and Mascarpone together to make the ideal cheesecake as they both balance the richness of mascarpone with the tang of the philadelphia cream cheese.

Other substitutes for mascarpone in some other recipes are Requeson cheese, heavy cream, Creme fraiche, Full fat sour cream, Vegan mascarpone, Full fat Greek Yogurt and even regular cream cheese.
