The reason why mebendazole was discontinued was for commercial and business reasons and not for any safety issues or any ineffectiveness.

The original manufacturers and distributors of mebendazole also formerly sold as Vermox withdrew mebendazole from the United States commercial market, just strictly for commercial and business reasons.

The primary factors that resulted in the discontinuation of mebendazole (formerly Vermox) included focus on donation, price volatility, corporate shifts and limited market demand.

Rather than keeping mebendazole widely available on the commercial market, the manufacturer of mebendazole largely shifted their focus to supplying mebendazole to countries in high risk regions through the Johnson & Johnson Vermox Donation Program.

And because of the limited supply and shift in corporate ownership, mebendazole became incredibly expensive and the rights to the mebendazole drug were also purchased by companies like Impax laboratories, who reintroduced a chewable version of mebendazole called Emverm, which also had a much higher price point.

The original brand name version of mebendazole was phased out, and when the rights to the generic formulas of mebendazole changed hands, companies also had opted to drop the older versions of mebendazole, instead of sustain manufacturing costs.

And there was also limited market demand for mebendazole.

The limited market demand for mebendazole, was mainly a result of intestinal worm infections becoming much less common in the United States, when compared to other parts of the world.

And as a result of the dwindling patient base and demand for mebendazole, it meant that the mebendazole drug was not highly profitable for the large pharmaceutical companies to continue to make and distribute commercially.

While mebendazole also known as Vermox is not available in the United States under the name mebendazole or Vermox, the drug mebendazole is still available in the United States, but only under the brand name of Emverm.

The older brand name, Vermox is what was discontinued in the United States and no longer available.

Emverm is only available by prescription and is a chewable medication that is used for treating common intestinal worm infections like hookworm, roundworm, whipworm and pinworm.

You must visit your doctor to get an official diagnoses for the parasites to be prescribed Emverm.
