Most coffee shops including Starbucks do filter their water for coffee and drinks.
Many of the coffee shops use commercial grade water filter systems to ensure you get the best quality and best tasting coffee.
Some of the filter systems that most coffee shops use are multi stage filtration, Ion exchange, carbon filters and reverse osmosis.
The Ion exchange filters reduce limescale and filter out chlorine and other contaminants and carbon filters use activated carbon to remove impurities like sediment, chlorine and organic compounds.
The best water to use in a coffee maker is bottled water or filtered water without any chlorine.
Chlorine in water can make coffee taste bad and could upset your stomach as well.
For the best flavored and tasting coffee you want to use water that is free of chemicals including chlorine and fluoride.
Some well water like my well water makes great tasting coffee without filtering and others may need filtering to make good coffee.
If your tap water contains chlorine or is hard water then you should use bottled water for your coffee for the best tasting coffee.
You can also put a filter on your sink and filter your city water to remove chlorine and make for better tasting coffee.
When using a filter coffee machine you always use cold or room temperature water and not hot water.
The cold water allows the coffee machine to heat the water as it should and for proper extraction.
You do not put hot water in a filter coffee machine as the filter coffee machine heats the water as it passes through the machine.
The filter coffee machine heats the water and sucks it through the machine and so you need to use cold water or room temperature water in your coffee machine.
Using cold water in the coffee machine allows the coffee maker to heat the water evenly and at the right rate for the proper extraction of the coffee flavors.
You can put coffee in the filter the night before so it will be ready to brew the next day.
Some coffee makers have a setting and timer to automatically brew coffee in the morning and if your coffee maker does you can add the coffee grounds to the filter the night before and add water to the reservoir the night before and set the time for when you want the coffee to brew.
When the time comes the next day then the coffee maker will automatically turn on and start brewing coffee.
You can also add coffee grounds to the filter the night before and add water in a regular coffee maker and then when you get up in the morning you can turn the coffee maker on to make the coffee.
I do this myself so that the coffee will be ready quicker before I have to go to work.
After I get up in the morning I go start the coffee and then go take my shower and by the time my shower is done and I'm dressed for the day the coffee is ready.
It saves me time by already having the coffee in the machine and ready to brew.
