The abandoned mining town in Kansas is Treece, Kansas.

Treece, Kansas is a town in Cherokee County, Kansas and was founded in the year 1917.

Treece, Kansas was a major supplier of zinc, iron and lead ore during World Wore I and World War II.

After the 1950s ore production declined and the town's economy collapsed.

The mining then left the soil contaminated with zinc and lead and made the area uninhabitable.

Most of the buildings and other facilities in Treece, Kansas have been demolished.

The type of coal that is mined in Kansas is bituminous coal which is a medium to high sulfur coal with an average sulfur content of 3 percent to 5 percent.

Coal was mined in Osage County Kansas and in East Central Kansas from the years 1885 to 1969.

In the year 1889 Osage County Kansas had 118 coal mines which employed over 2,200 people.

By the year 1986 the coal production in Kansas would be near 2.7 million to 3.6 million metric tons of annual production.

As of now there are still 12 coal mines in Kansas which are in constant or periodic operation.
