Cooking lettuce does soften it.

If you need to soften lettuce a good way to soften the lettuce is to boil the lettuce for 4 to 5 minutes or until it's soft enough.

To keep lettuce fresh longer with a paper towel you lay a paper towel on the bottom and of a bowel and then place your lettuce on the paper towel.

Then place another paper towel on top of the lettuce and put the lid on the container.

Then flip the container over for storage in the refrigerator.

The paper towels will then absorb any excess moisture and keep the lettuce fresh longer.

Aluminum foil can also keep lettuce fresh as the aluminum foil helps to retain the moisture in the lettuce leaves which keeps the lettuce fresh and also crisp for much longer.

If your lettuce you have is fresh from the store or garden then storing the lettuce in aluminum foil can make it last up to a month.

Vinegar also makes lettuce last longer.

To use vinegar to keep lettuce fresh longer you should soak the lettuce leaves for 2 minutes in a bowl of 10 cups of water and 1/4 cup of white vinegar.

Lemon juice does keep lettuce fresh and when you add the lemon juice which is acidic to water and lettuce it encourages cell turnover in the lettuce leaves and allows them to absorb even more water.

This results in re crisped and revived lettuce that keeps fresher longer.

Cutting lettuce does make the lettuce go bad faster if not refrigerated.

Cut lettuce will usually last a few days or so at room temperature but if you store the cut lettuce or shredded lettuce in an airtight container Ziploc bag then the cut lettuce will last up to a week in the refrigerator.

It's better to store lettuce unwashed and stored as a whole head of lettuce as cutting the lettuce and also washing it before hand speeds up the wilting due to the high water content.

If you have cut lettuce to store then you should store the cut lettuce in an airtight container or airtight back and the cut lettuce will last in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Lettuce should sit in and soak in water and vinegar for 2 minutes with a mixture of 5 percent white vinegar and 1/4 cup or 10 cups of water.

Lettuce should be soaked in cold water for at least 30 minutes before removing.

Soaking lettuce in cold water can help revive wilted lettuce as when you place the wilted lettuce in cold or ice water the cells of the lettuce begin to absorb the water and then replenish the perched cells.

The reason why you soak lettuce in salt water is to remove any pesticides and insecticides as well as bacteria and bugs that can be on the lettuce.

Wash the leaves well in the sink or a large bowl of water. Transfer the leaves to a colander and gently shake to remove water.
Place leaves, in a single layer, on a clean, dry tea towel or paper towel and pat dry.

You should always refrigerate lettuce because after 2 hours of the lettuce sitting out the lettuce can start to wilt and go bad and grow bacteria.

Wrap the lettuce and store the lettuce in the crisper drawer.

You can leave lettuce out of the refrigerator for around two hours at room temperature or a maximum of one hour if the temperature is more than 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

You should refrigerate the lettuce, no matter the type, after two hours of sitting out.

Bagged salad can sit out at room temperature for up to 2 hours.

After 2 hours the bagged salad can and will grow bacteria and should be thrown out.
