You can use lager instead of ale in stew if it's a strong lager such as Belgian Leffe or Duvel.

Normal lagers will not make for a great stew but it will be okay to use lager in stew.

The ale that is best for stew is stouts, Porters, Brown Ales, Dark Lagers, Medium to full bodied lagers, Amber ales, Guinness Draught and Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale.
