You can substitute baking soda for baking powder and substitute baking powder for baking soda but you just need to change the amounts you use.

If you don't have baking powder you can use baking soda instead.

You can substitute baking soda for baking powder and vice versa and to do so you simply use 1/3 teaspoon baking soda for every 1 teaspoon baking powder.

Also a neutral-tasting acid, like white vinegar or lemon juice, will react with baking soda to create the leavening powers you need.

To substitute one teaspoon of baking powder, combine 1/4 teaspoon baking soda with 1/2 teaspoon white vinegar or ½ teaspoon lemon juice.

Baking powder and baking soda are not the same thing and produce different results when baking although they are interchangeable in most recipes.
