A salad spinner, sometimes called a salad tosser, is a tool that removes excess liquid or water from salad greens, lettuce leaves, or other leafy vegetables.
Salad spinners have an inner strainer basket, similar to a colander, where you place the fresh greens and an outer bowl that connects to the spinning mechanism.
A salad spinner will clean greens better than handwashing (by making sure to actually remove the dirty water, instead of letting it sit on the leaves) and with less mess and hassle.
It will also dry your greens more efficiently, and the less water you have on your lettuce, the better your vinaigrette will stick.
If you don't have a salad spinner you can grab a clean plastic grocery bag, add the wet lettuce to that along with a few paper towels and then spin as above for the same effect.
If stepping outdoors is not convenient just pin or tie the pillowcase closed and toss it in the washing machine on spin cycle for a minute or two.
For greens such as kale or chard, chop or tear large leaves into smaller pieces.
Step 2: Put the torn leaves into the colander of your salad spinner.
Run cool water over the produce to wash it thoroughly.
Toss the leaves with your hands if you'd like.
To prolong the life of lettuce by a day or two, stick to tearing by hand.
Tearing allows leaves to break along their natural fault lines, rupturing fewer cells and reducing premature browning.
