The pacific Salmon also known as the Oncorhynchus is a genus of fish in the family Salmonidae; it contains the Pacific salmon and Pacific trout.

The name of the genus is derived from the Greek ὄγκος + ῥύγχος, in reference to the hooked snout that the males develop during mating season.

Five species of Pacific salmon thrive in the North Pacific waters of the US and Canada: chinook (also called king), coho, pink, sockeye, and chum salmon.

They begin their lives in freshwater streams, lakes, and rivers and migrate to the sea as small fish called smolts.
