Mosquito Hawks do not bite you or sting you.

The mosquito hawks are not mosquitoes, but they don't eat them either.

They are crane flies, and they neither bite nor sting.

Mosquito hawks and crane flies won't hurt you.

While you don't have to “save” them for their mosquito control value, there is no need to eliminate these harmless flies.

They serve as food for a large variety of other insects, birds, and fish and their larvae provide a great service in munching away at the decaying matter in wetlands.

Many people call these “mosquito hawks” or “mosquito eaters,” but unfortunately, they are not predators of mosquitoes.

These flying insects are actually adult crane flies and although annoying to find in the home, they are basically harmless and won't help with any mosquito problems.

Despite their common name they do not actually eat mosquitoes.

Sometimes they eat the mosquito larvae but not enough to actually consider them mosquito hawks or mosquito eaters.

So they wouldn't be considered a way to get rid of mosquitoes naturally.

Crane fly is a common name referring to any member of the insect family Tipulidae, of the order Diptera, true flies in the superfamily Tipuloidea.

Cylindrotominae, Limoniinae, and Pediciinae have been ranked as subfamilies of Tipulidae by most authors, though occasionally elevated to family rank.
