To legally tell someone to stop contacting you first tell the person direct either over the phone or in person.

Tell the person to stop contacting you and if they don't you'll get the court or law involved.

Then if they continue contacting you then contact a lawyer and have a cease and desist letter sent to them to tell them that if they don't stop contacting you that they will be taken to court.

Sometimes you may need the police to make contact with the person if you know where they live to tell them to stop contacting you.

You may also take the person to court and get a no contact order put in place by the judge.

Then if the person still contacts you then they can be arrested for violation of the court ordered no contact order.

However it can be hard to get a no contact order put in place by a judge unless you're being threatened or are in danger.

An order of protection or restraining order is not likely to be granted because someone is simply “annoying” you or because someone is sending you multiple text messages.

There must be a threat or imminent danger in order to get an order of protection or protection order granted.

However in most cases a brief letter asking the person to quit contacting you by phone, by text, by email, by letter, by visit, by Facebook, by Twitter, or any other way ought to do the trick.

You can make it polite, but don't leave any room for doubt that you want to be left alone.

You don't need to say why, just ask to be left alone.
