Going without central heating? Sure I can I don't have central heat in my home but I do have heat. I use a couple electric space heaters when it's just a little bit cold and will be warming back up in the afternoon.
And I have a wood stove that I use as my main heat source when the temperatures stay cold day and night.
The electric heaters are still used overnight to keep the house from getting to cold should the wood stove fire burn out while I'm sleeping but other than that the wood stove is my main heat source through the cold winter.
Let me tell you a little story. Back in the winter of 2013 I was at a place I lived at in Arkansas from the age of 13 until I turned 20 where I then moved back to Kansas where I was born.
Anyway in 2013 I was there taking care of the property we still had there and we had an Ice storm roll through knocking out the power to a lot of the State of Arkansas.
I had no other heat source other than the electric space heaters I was using since we didn't live there anymore and I was only gonna be at the place for a few weeks.
I was gonna leave before the ice storm but as I got 11 miles away my truck broke down. The A/C compressor locked up when I had my defroster on. The serpentine belt shredded up by the AC compressor and I was stranded in the cold early in the morning.
I just sat there in my truck until Daylight when the guy from the town I was in came by and helped me.
He offered me a ride back to the house where I had just left from. I took him up on the offer and we just left my truck where it was and he said he'd help get it moved to his property for me so it would be okay during the ice storm.
I got back to the house thankfully to this guy and was using the space heaters that day and then the power went out about 3 hours later and it stayed off for a week. I was miserable. It was like a freezer in the house and I slept under the covers.
I would not go without heat there's no way even if the heat cost me a fortune I would have it. That's one reason I love wood stoves. I can get my fire wood for free and I still will have heat should the power go out.
