When winter comes around the worms usually go back into the ground into burrows and remain in the ground and burrows until spring which is when the worms usually emerge.

Worms usually stay below soil frozen hard as rock and topped by ice and snow.

The worms in winter also usually are coiled into a slime-coated ball into a sleep like state called estivation, which is similar to hibernation for bears.

So basically worms hibernate sorta like bears because the worms stay in the ground and sleep or hibernate until the weather warms up.

Once the weather warms up again the worms then come out of the soil and then emerge and then you should see them in the spring and summertime.
