When you're arrested and not able to make bail or have no bail set you can be held in jail without charges against you for up to 24 hours.

After 24 hours the police either have to charge you with a crime or they have to release you.

However in some more serious cases the police and jail can request a hold to allow them to legally hold you in jail longer than the 24 hours without charges.

If that happens then they can hold you in jail for up to 96 hours without charges.

If you can bail out of jail then you should bail out and then return to court instead of sitting in jail wasting your time waiting to be charged.
