A police officer can follow you for no reason if they want too.

Just like other vehicles can follow you from behind for as long as they want too.

Following someone in their vehicle is not illegal although if a car does continue to follow you then it can be seen as suspicious if they follow you everywhere you go.

So that also means that a cop has the legal right to follow you and if you're not doing anything wrong then the cop will not pull you over.

I've had cops follow me for awhile and then they just went on.

The cop however does have to have a probable cause to stop you though or search your vehicle but they can legally follow you without needing probable cause.

The cop can also follow behind you when walking as well but they must suspect you of doing something illegal to make you stop.

If you're walking or a passenger in the vehicle and you get stopped you do not have to ID yourself unless you're be suspected of a crime or are being arrested.
