When a fox makes a sound at night you'll usually hear sounds which are a quick series of barks, and a scream-y variation on a howl.
If you hear something like that then foxes are pretty near.
Most foxes will not harm you as long as you stay away from them and do not make them feel threatened but if they do feel threatened then they may in rare cases try to attack you.
However the fox would most likely just run off to avoid getting in a fight and getting killed or injured.
