If you've been arrested and then get bailed out of jail and then have a court date to appear in court and are summoned to court then you must also appear in court with or without your lawyer.

If you happen to be in the hospital and cannot actually appear in court then the lawyer could appear in court with you or the judge may set another date for court when you can appear in court.

In most cases you must appear in court for things that you've been charged with or have been arrested for and if you don't appear in court you could be arrested when an arrest warrant goes out for you.

But if you're out of state and need to sue someone in court such as for a car accident etc or you're just unable to appear in court due to injuries then yes a lawyer or attorney can usually appear in court for you and plead your case.

It's usually better for you though if you can appear in court and plead your case along with your attorney or lawyer.
