Under USA law a Lemon Car is a car or any other vehicle that turns out to have several manufacturing defects affecting its safety, value or utility.

Any vehicle with such severe issues may be termed a lemon and, by extension, so may any product with flaws too great or severe to serve its purpose.

Under the Lemon Law in most states the Lemon car must 1) have a "substantial defect," covered by warranty, that occurs within a certain time after purchase, and 2) continue to have the defect after a "reasonable number" of repair attempts.

Lemon refers to something sour that is not working correctly or something that is imperfect a dud, useless etc.

That's why we call used cars that are in bad shape or don't run correctly a Lemon because it's imperfect, useless etc.

So that's one reason we have Lemon Laws in place for people who happen to buy a car that turns out to be a lemon even though most people buy used cars as is.
