The reason that worms die on the sidewalk or pavement is because of the lack of moisture on their skin.

In order to survive the worm needs to keep it's body moist which they do when they are in the soil but when the worm comes up onto the sidewalk or other pavement away from the soil then the worms body dries out and when the worms body dries out they die.

Worms can also get stepped on or ran over with a bicycle on the sidewalk which could disfigure the worms body and cause death to the worm.

When it rains the worms come up to the surface of the sidewalk to get the moisture from the water but when the sun come out the water evaporates quickly and then the worms body dries out which causes the death.
