When someone is sentenced to prison, how long do they stay in the jail before getting shipped off to the prison to start there prison sentence?
Are they credited for time already served in the jail while awaiting trial?

It depends on how often the prisoners get picked up from the jail.
The prisoner transport vehicle usually only comes around once per week or even once a month depending on how far actual prison is from the jail.
So a person could be sitting in the jail for a month or even a few months before being picked up and sent to prison.
I've also heard that some have sat in jail for a year before being transferred to prison. But I'm not sure how true that is.
