The most common sanction in the United States is probation.

In the United States, probation is the most common criminal sanction, which allows millions of offenders who commit certain crimes to serve their sentences within the community, while under supervision instead of serving their sentence in a prison or jail.

Roughly 4.7 million people are on probation in the United States.

Probation is often favored over prison for rehabilitation and enables people to maintain their employment and family ties, while also complying with court orders and court conditions.

Probation is also the most frequently used criminal sanction for juveniles, who commit some crimes, which emphasizes on rehabilitation over detention.

Monetary sanctions, including of fines, restitution and court fees are also very common sanctions in the United States and are frequently applied to a wide range of criminal offenses as well as traffic violations and even felonies.

The total number of people in the correctional system, including people on parole or probation, far exceeds those that are actually in prison.

The top crimes in America, by frequency, are overwhelmingly property crimes, with Larceny/Theft being the most common, followed by Burglary and Motor Vehicle Theft, while the most common violent crime is Aggravated Assault.

Property crimes occur far more often than violent crimes, with theft representing a significant portion of all reported offenses.

Larceny and theft is the most frequent crime and involves taking of property without force, including bicycle theft, pickpocketing, shoplifting etc.

Burglary is also a common crime that is committed and involves the unlawful entry into a building or structure, like a home or business with the intent to commit a crime, which is often theft.

And motor vehicle theft is also a common crime and is the unlawful taking or stealing of a motor vehicle, like a car, truck, motorcycle etc.

Common violent crimes are aggravated assault, murder/nonnegligent manslaughter, rape/sexual assault and robbery.

Murder/nonnegligent manslaughter is the unlawful killing of another person.

Rape/sexual assault includes both attempted and completed sexual offenses.

Robbery is theft using force or the threat of force.

And aggravated assault is the most common violent crime, involving serious physical harm or the threat of harm.

Property crimes, most particularly theft, far outnumber violent crimes.

Aggravated assault is also the leading violent offense.

And drug offenses are also a significant category of crimes committed and often lead to federal charges and even jail time or prison time.
