What does it mean when it says the connection was reset?

My browser Firefox keeps telling me connection reset and won't load some websites but then later it loads just fine.

What causes the connection reset error in Firefox web browser?

When you get the error connection reset it means that your computer sent a data packet to the remote site and Instead of a response, the remote site sent a FIN packet (short for finish) which closed the connection.

It can be an error with your internet connection causing the problem or could be on the server side where the website is hosted.

Another reason is that the IP you're using for your internet connection could be black listed on the server which means you'd have to get the IP off the black list by contacting the owner of the website.

Usually though it's just temporary and resolves on it's own.

You can sometimes fix the connection reset error by adjust the LAN settings in your browser especially if you're using a proxy IP.

  1. Select Settings.
  2. Click Show advanced settings.
  3. Click Change proxy settings. ...
  4. Click LAN Settings.
  5. Make sure that the "Automatically detect settings" checkbox is selected.
  6. Click OK for all dialog boxes.
