The reason why NJ can't sell clothes on Sunday is a result of the Blue Laws.

The blue laws in NJ which was originally written on blue paper, which is where it got it's name is also known as NJSA 2A:171-5.8 is a law that prohibits the sale on Sunday of clothing or other wearing apparel, building and lumber supply materials, home, business or office furnishings, furniture, household, business or office appliances etc.

However all other counties in NJ have opted out of the Sunday Closing laws except  Bergen County NJ.

And while other counties in NJ have opted out of the Sunday Closing laws that pertain to the Blue Laws, Bergen County, including Paramus and the American Dream mall, still observes the blue law or Sunday closing laws.

The laws in Bergen County NJ specifically prohibit the sale of clothing, home furnishing and appliances on Sundays.

And even large retain centers such as the American Dream mall, also must adhere to these laws, although some entertainment venues within the mall may still be open.

Bergen is the only county in New Jersey which actually enforces Blue Laws – legislation that limits Sunday shopping.

Stores are also closed on Sunday in parts of New Jersey due to the old "blue laws" that originated from religious traditions, but also have modern secular justifications like reducing traffic and noise.

While many parts of New Jersey no longer enforce these laws, Bergen County still maintains stricter prohibitions on Sunday retail shopping, with specific exceptions for some items like gasoline and personal hygiene products.
