Some prisoners and prison systems allow what's called a compassionate release which allows the prisoner to leave prison for a short amount of time to attend the funeral of a family member.

But it can depend on the prisoner and what crime they've committed etc as to whether they'll be allowed to leave prison grounds to attend the funeral.

It totally depends on the prison and what security level the prisoner is in.

A friend of mine though who's a nurse at a prison lost her son in an auto accident and she actually had a few prisoners become good friends with her in the prison and the prison system actually allowed those prisoners to go to the funeral with her and be with her during her time of need.

The prisoners though were trustees and were low risk and they came in plain clothing and not handcuffed but were escorted by guards.

That's rare for that to happen though but some prisons do allow some prisoners to leave prison for the day to attend a funeral but they'll be escorted by the guards.
