If the package weighs more than 13 oz and you're using postage stamps then it must be taken into the USPS and dropped of at the counter otherwise the package will likely be returned to you.
If you've bought postage online and have prepaid for the postage online through a USPS online shipping label then yes you can drop the USPS package in any USPS drop box as long as the package easily fits into the box.
