If you can get the firewood for free and just do the work involved to cut split and stack the firewood then it could save you money.

But if you have to buy the firewood for $300.00 per cord then you'd be looking at at least $300.00 per month for heating costs.

For me that wouldn't save anything because I only spend between $150.00 to $200.00 per month for my natural gas heating bill so heating with wood would cost me more money.

Even if you can get the wood for free then you also have to factor in the time and work involved preparing and gathering and bringing in the firewood.

For me I would say no to firewood and would just use natural gas as my heating source and also wood is a mess to deal with as well.

Yes it's true. It really helps save money. I checked it with a personal example. We decided to abandon gas and electric heating. We used only firewood. This was for experimental purposes. But we decided that we will heat the wood and more. We were able to save a large amount of money. I am glad, because this money was enough to fulfill my dream. We were able to establish a Finnish sauna in our yard. This sauna builder http://sdsaustralia.com installed my sauna. I am really happy!

I heat my home using a wood burning stove and free firewood that is given to me and wood I cut off a piece of land I own in another town.

So while the wood is sorta free it isn't entirely free since I have to travel to get it and then use my chainsaw to cut the wood and then split it and let it dry out to be ready to burn.

I do save some money heating my house mostly with wood but I may give up wood burning after a few more years and heat my home completely using natural gas forced air furnace heat.

If I had to buy wood I would save a little bit but not all that much.

Plus although I love cutting wood and burning wood I have a back injury that is making it harder and harder for me to sustain the living and carrying, splitting etc the firewood for heat.

If you can use natural gas then I would say use the natural gas unless you just love to have wood heat and love working with wood.

If you have only oil heat, electric heat or propane heat then wood would certainly almost always be cheaper to heat with than those forms of heat.

When I first moved into my current house 6 years ago I was heating with heating oil as that's the only option I have in this area.

No natural gas available and electric or propane as the only other option.

My house used to cost me $700.00 per month to heat with heating oil which is very expensive and the price would change whenever the price per gallon of heating oil went up or down.

When I had my heating oil tank refilled I had to pay for the fill in cash or debit/credit card which was expensive as it was not a monthly bill.

I had to have over $1,000.00 to fill the heating oil tank when needed.

My average cost to heat my home using heating oil per winter season was around $4,200.00 per heating season which was expensive.

Now with wood heat I heat my home for $1,500.00 per year which is a huge savings so I save $2,700.00 per year.

However if I had natural gas then I wouldn't save anything.
