The second chance law in California is a law that was put in place by the Senate Bill 731 that made essential changes to the Clean Slate Act, AB 1076.

The changes made to the Clean Slate Act, AB 1076 gives a person a second chance and is often called a record sealing law.

SB 731 passed in September 2022 and it went into effect on January 1st 2023.

The Senate Bill 731 allows most felony convictions to be automatically cleared after 4 years have passed.

The state of California's Clean Slate Act (AB 1076 or Penal Code 1076 PC) automatically seals some arrest records and dismisses certain criminal convictions.

It was formally signed into law in October 2019 by Governor Gavin Newsom.

All felony records that did not lead to charges get automatically sealed after three years.

In California, a felony conviction stays on your record forever, if you do not get it expunged.

You may be eligible for an expungement if you did not serve time in state prison.

Until you get the conviction removed from your criminal history, you can face serious obstacles.
