Yes, a marriage certificate is often required as a supporting document when applying for a passport. This document serves various purposes, and is subject to the passport issuance policies of the respective country.  These policies also request to attest the marriage certificate. Typically, it can be needed for the following purposes:

  1. Name Change Verification: If a person has changed his or her name post-marriage, the marriage certificate will be a proof of the name change. This is particularly important for individuals who wish to update their passport with their married name.
  2. Spousal Details: The passport application processing may require information about the spouse, such as his or her name and citizenship status. This document provides official confirmation of the marital relationship.
  3. Family Information: Passport applications often seek details about the family or dependents. A marriage certificate establishes the legal relationship between spouses, contributing to a comprehensive family profile.
  4. Traveling with Spouse: If spouses plan to travel together, having both names linked through a marriage certificate can be required to facilitate joint applications and streamline the travel documentation process.

A Marriage certificate is sometimes but not always required for Passport in India.

To endorse the spouse's name on your passport, you have to apply for a 'Re-issue' of passport and get the specified change done in personal particulars.

To check the complete list of documents to be submitted along with the application form, please click on "Documents Advisor" link on Home page.

Self Attest these documents: Your passport copy of the First Five and the Last two pages.

Indian Address proof (If Applicable for your case).

Copy of Marriage Certificate (ONLY If you are married).
