The toxic trio is a term which means the risk of child abuse and neglect which stems from a combination of domestic violence, parental mental health issues and/or learning disability, and parental alcohol and/or drug misuse.

The term 'Toxic Trio' has been used to describe the issues of domestic abuse, mental ill-health and substance misuse which have been identified as common features of families where harm to children and adults has occurred.

Older children, particularly 16- and 17-year-olds, are at a greater risk of abuse and neglect than others, The Children's Society have found.

Child protection is part of the safeguarding process.

It focuses on protecting individual children identified as suffering or likely to suffer significant harm.

This includes child protection procedures which detail how to respond to concerns about a child.

This member of the toxic trio: Creates an inconsistent and unpredictable environment for children.

May lead to parents or carers showing a lack of emotional warmth as well as high levels of aggression.
