I've found that when I tried to watch TV in the dark the light coming off the TV caused me eye strain.
I'm not sure if it can actually harm your eyes by watching TV in the dark but I'm sure it could eventually since your eyes or at least my eyes get strained and tired from watching a TV in the dark.
I always leave the light on in the room now when watching TV and my eyes don't strain anymore.
