A urostomy is permanent and cannot be reversed.

Different pouching systems are made to last different lengths of time. Some are changed every day, some every 3 days or so, and some just once a week.

It depends on type of pouch you use.

Your pouch should be changed on a schedule that fits your routine.

A urostomy is a surgical procedure that creates a stoma for the urinary system.

A urostomy is made to avail for urinary diversion in cases where drainage of urine through the bladder and urethra is not possible, e.g. after extensive surgery or in case of obstruction.

A urostomy is an opening in the belly (abdominal wall) that's made during surgery.

It re-directs urine away from a bladder that's diseased, has been injured, or isn't working as it should.

The bladder is either bypassed or removed.

With urostomy, you'll have to wear a pouch on the outside of your body.

You won't be able to urinate normally like you would after continent urinary diversion surgery.

Having a urostomy should not affect your working life, unless your job involves heavy types of manual work such as digging.

Ask your stoma nurse for advice if you are unsure about this.

What's the difference between ileostomy and urostomy?

An ileostomy pouch is a drainable pouch that collects the stool from the small bowel.

What is a urostomy?

A urostomy is a surgically created diversion of urine.

For example, a urostomy may be created when the bladder is removed and the patient needs a new way to store and pass urine.

For many people, having a bag or pouch attached to their body is a huge emotional adjustment.

It might feel odd or even scary at first.

Those are completely normal feelings.

But know that you can be active, wear fashionable clothes and live a happy, full life with a stoma bag.
