I've noticed over the past few mornings I've woken up with a dry mouth.

My mouth is so dry in the morning that I've had to keep a glass of water on my night stand so I can immediately take a drink of water in the morning once I wake up.

What is causing my mouth to be so dry and is it something I should go to the doctor for?

If you're waking up with a dry mouth every morning, something is wrong. Either you're doing something that dehydrates you, you're allergic/sensitive the environment you sleep in, your mouth doesn't produce sufficient saliva or you have a sinus problem,

Simple things you can do to avoid dehydration:

  • Avoid working out more than a few hours before bed.
  • Maintain hydration in the hours before you go to bed, especially if you exercised that day and/or the climate was particularly hot/dry.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol before bed.
  • Drink some water, juice or a sports beverage such as gatorade before bed... but not too much.
  • Take a multi-vitamin with your last meal before going to bed. The vitamins and enzymes can help your body retain hydration.
  • Keep a glass of water next to your bed and drink it at night when/if you wake up.
  • Never over-hydrate yourself.
  • Do you take any prescription or non-prescription medicines? Some common medications can cause dry mouth, especially antihistamines like Claritin and some SSRIs.
  • Are you a smoker? Smoking is terrible for mouth hydration. Consider quitting.
  • Chew sugarless gum occasionally during the day, it can increase saliva production.
  • Do you use mouthwash? Alcohol-based mouthwashes can cause dryness. Switch to a mouthwash from Biotine or use Crest Pro-Health.
  • Your toothpaste might also be irritating to your mouth. Try something for "sensitive" mouths and/or a Biotine toothpaste.

Evaluate your sleep environment:
It's possible that you're allergic to something in your room (mold, dust, animal dander, insect infestations) which is causing the dryness. Clean it often.

Old rugs/drapes/bedding/sheets/comforters/pillows/blankets can also cause allergic reactions which can cause dryness. Clean them and/or get new ones. Consider investing in an air purifier. Also, your room might be really dry. Consider investing in a humidifier to add more moisture to the room... unless your room is too damp. If your room is damp, there may be mold which may be causing the problem.

Try out some dry mouth products:
Biotine <http://www.biotene.com> makes some good toothpastes, mouthwashes and gels that increase enzyme and saliva production in your mouth.

Sinus Problems
It may be a sinus problem, especially if you're a mouth breather. Mouth breathing is notorious for drying your mouth out at night. Consult with a doctor.
