The reason there are no hurricanes in California is because of the wind direction and the cold water which make it impossible for the hurricanes to form in California.

In order to make it all the way to the U.S. West Coast, the storms have to traverse a long stretch of ocean water that is far too cold to sustain hurricanes.

"Essentially, the very cold water that up wells off the California coast and gives coastal California such a cool, benign climate also protects it from hurricanes.

In short, wind direction and cold water are the main reasons hurricanes aren't as common on the West Coast.

The warmer the water, the better chance the storm becomes a strong hurricane.

California lacks these warmer waters and is usually under 75F degrees, even around 60F degrees in the upper northwest.

A Hurricane has hit Antarctica in the past.

Dakshayani was the first hurricane ever in the Antarctica Basin.

It became a Tropical Storm on December 23, and a Tropical Depression on December 25. It's remains made landfall in the Antarctic Peninsula on December 26, before dissipating on December 27th.

South America does get hurricanes and hurricanes in South American are known as tropical cyclones.

The official hurricane season for the Atlantic basin is from June 1 to November 30, but tropical cyclone activity sometimes occurs before and after these dates, respectively.

The peak of the Atlantic hurricane season is September 10, with most activity occurring between mid-August and mid-October.

Hurricanes do hit Africa.

Africa gets hurricanes and they are not safe from hurricanes.

North Western Australia is the most cyclone-prone region in Australa.

The area between Broome and Exmouth averages 1 severe cyclone per year.

The usual life cycle of a cyclone is 3-7 days.

Around the world a severe tropical cylone is also known as: hurricane, typhoon or tropical storm.

Hurricanes are in the Atlantic and Northern Pacific. So, the U.S. Eastern Seaboard and the Caribbean, as well as (less frequently), the U.S. and Mexican west coasts, all get hurricanes.

So, north of the equator, India and Bangladesh get tropical cyclones, as does Australia in the Southern Hemisphere.

China also has Hurricanes.

Hurricanes in China are called typhoons.

Typhoons hit China more often than any other country in Asia.

On the average, about 7 or 8 land each year.

China is a country that suffers from hurricanes because its typhoon season lasts all year.

The strongest recorded hurricane in China was named Typhoon Rammasun.

Hainan averages 1.3 tropical cyclones annually, while Fujian experiences 1.2 tropical cyclones annually, and Zhejiang witnessed 0.9 tropical cyclones annually.

The wettest tropical cyclone on record for the mainland was Super Typhoon Carla, which dropped 2,749 millimeters (108.2 in) of rain over a 48-hour period.

China is a hurricane-prone place because of the year-round typhoon season.

You could say it's the country that gets the most hurricanes each year. Since 1970, there have been over 127 hurricanes in China.

In the last few decades, almost all types of major hazards except volcanic eruptions have hit China; these include earthquakes, typhoons, floods, droughts and sandstorms, storm surges, landslides and debris flows, hailstorms, cold waves, heat waves, pests and rodent disease, forest and grassland fires, and red tides.
