It is normal for your baby to have diarrhea and constipation at the same time.

Although most times a baby will have just constipation or just diarrhea but in some cases a baby may experience constipation and then diarrhea which is normal.

However if the diarrhea lasts longer than 24 hours then you should take the baby to urgent care, the hospital or to the doctor as the baby could get dehydrated.

Constipation can usually be treated at home or with advice from your doctor.

If your newborn has diarrhea that lasts for more than 24 hours, you should see a doctor because they may have a bacterial or viral infection.

Take your baby or child to a doctor if the constipation lasts longer than two weeks or is accompanied by:

    Fever.
    Not eating.
    Blood in the stool.
    Abdominal swelling.
    Weight loss.
    Pain during bowel movements.
Part of the intestine coming out of the anus (rectal prolapse)

Constipation and diarrhea may not commonly occur together, but it is possible.

A few different issues can cause this rapid change in bowel patterns.

Managing symptoms may sometimes be enough, such as when a temporary infection or food intolerance has caused constipation after diarrhea.
