In most cases you do need a dental crown after a root canal although sometimes you may not need a dental crown after the root canal.

Whether or not you need a dental crown after a root canal depends highly on the location of the tooth in the mouth—teeth towards the back of the mouth like molars and premolars are needed more for chewing, and generally require crowns, where incisors or canines which aren't needed for chewing don't always require crowns.

The installation of a crown is an important follow-up to root canal therapy to reinforce a now-weakened tooth.

If you do not get a crown you'll be at risk for chipping, breaking, or losing the tooth in question.

There is also a chance the tooth will be extra sensitive and eating and drinking certain things will cause pain.

The cost to have a root canal done ranges from $600.00 to $14,00.00 depending on the dental office or dentist who does the root canal and the location of the tooth and the state.

Medicare does not cover the cost of root canals or other dental procedures.

Medicare also does not cover other dental procedures which include cleanings, fillings, extractions, root canals, and dentures, among other things.

Other health insurance or dental insurance will cover the cost of the root canal if it's deemed medically necessary.

A root canal is done and needed when a persons tooth becomes irreversibly inflamed and damaged.

The tooth's dental pulp – often called the “nerve” – became exposed to bacteria, and therefore needs to be removed to deter further pain and infection.

Root canals are a dental treatment that is done to repair and save a badly damaged or infected tooth instead of removing it.

The term "root canal" comes from cleaning of the canals inside a tooth's root.

Decades ago, root canal treatments often were painful.

Does a root canal hurt?

A root canal procedure sounds scary, but with today's technology, it's typically not a whole lot more different than having a deep filling.

There's little to no pain because your dentist will use local anesthesia to numb your tooth and gums so you're comfortable during the procedure.
