An eye exam for both adults and children takes between 30 minutes to 45 minutes from start to finish and sometimes it takes less time.
During the eye exam you'll be asked about your medical history and any vision problems you might be experiencing.
Then your eye doctor measures your visual acuity to see if you need glasses or contact lenses to improve your vision.
Also you'll be given a numbing drop in your eyes then your eye pressure is measured.
A child eye test takes around 30 to 50 minutes from start to finish as well.
Children should have their first comprehensive eye exam at 6 months of age.
After that the child should then have their eyes examined again at age 3 and just before they enter the first grade — at about age 5 or 6.
School-aged children should have an eye exam at least every two years if no vision correction is required.
A child's eye exam will include things such as a vision (visual acuity) test where the eye doctor will test how well your child sees at different distances.
If your child can read, they then also use the standard eye chart. If not, then the eye doctor will use shapes or a single letter in different positions (called the “tumbling E” test).
An eye doctor appointment for a child is usually less scary than a dental checkup or a regular doctors checkup.
