A sweetgum tree is similar to a maple tree but they are not the same tree.

All major maple trees have leaves that are divided into three to five lobes.

And they have an opposite leaf arrangement.

Other trees with "maple-like" leave which are the sycamore, sweetgum, and yellow-poplar trees have leaves that are alternate in arrangement.

The best and easiest way to identify maple leaves is to break the leaves off the twig as Maple Leaves will have a milky like sap coming out of the end of the maple leaf.

Maple Tree Leaves are edible and can be eaten if you want to eat them.

The maple tree is mostly know for it's maple syrup which is edible.

But other parts of the maple tree are also edible and can be eaten.

You can eat the maple tree syrup, maple tree leaves, and even the maple tree seeds.

Maple Tree bark is also edible.

Even other leaves on some other trees are edible and even the tree bark on most other trees can be eaten as well.

I have a wilderness survival book that says that you can eat the tree bark and leaves of most any tree that is out in the wilderness.
