If you rented a Post Office Box online and have not used the post office box yet or have not picked up your post office box keys then you can request a full refund of your money within 30 days of renting the post office box.

If you have used the post office box or have picked up your keys then you may get a refund on the post office box but only for the remainder of the months that you have not used it.

So if you rented a Post Office Box for 6 months to a year and only used it for 6 months then you would get the refund for the other 6 months that you do not use the post office box.

If you only used the post office box for 1 or 2 months then you get the rest of the money back.

But you cannot get a full refund for the post office box if you've used the post office box.

To cancel a post office box just simply go up to the post office clerk and let them know your box number, show ID, and maybe sign a form saying you're closing your post office box.

If you have keys to the post office box then you need to return those keys after you get your mail out of the post office box.

When you change your address you'll also need to fill out a change of address form so that your mail will get redirected to the new address.

Yes you do have to return your post office box keys when closing your post office box.

If you rent a post office box from the post office and it has keys and you decide to close that post office box and move to another address then you need to return those keys.

If you don't return the keys to the post office box when closing the post office box you won't get your money back for the key.

Also the lock will be either re keyed or changed to a new lock.

So your key will be useless to open the box because the new person will need to know that they have the only key to the post office box other than the post office.

I have forgotten to return a key to the post office and nothing has happened to me.

But you should if you remember to return the key to the post office when you no longer need it.

Just go to the post office clerk and tell them you want to close your post office box and hand them the key and they will close the post office box for you.

You will also need to fill out a change of address form as well.
